Blasphemy is Treason Against God

Blasphemy is a type of treason against allegiance to a sworn oath to God.  An example of treason is betraying the country that a person has allegiance.  By the laws of many countries, the act of treason is punishable by death.

The key scriptural verse that has generated many questions on blasphemy is Matthew12:31-32, Mark 3:28-30, Luke 12:10, and predominately Hebrews 6:4-8.  The unforgiveness is absolutely true as verses state, but the verse does not state there is loss of Salvation. The question is what is the consequences, which many Biblical Scholars including this author state:

  1. A loss of rewards in Heaven, and
  2. A loss of guidance by the Holy Spirit for a specific time-period that can be for an entire lifetime.

The evidence is the Disciple Peter, Saul before becoming the Apostle Paul, and all the scriptures dealing with the impossibility to lose salvation.  Read the very detailed evidence for scriptural proof of those who did blasphemy, had suffering forms of consequences, and never lost their Salvation

Matthew 12:31-32 31 Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
Mark 3:28-30 28 “Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— 30 for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”
Luke 12:10 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
Hebrews 6:4-8 4 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age 6 and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. 7 Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. 8 But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.

A key verse of losing rewards in Heaven is "1 Corinthians 6:9-11" where the person does "not inherit", which means loss of all inheritance gained to the point in the life of the blasphemy occurring until a change has been made so new inheritance can be earned.  The grammatical structure of the verses in the Greek of Hebrews 6:4-8, as explained in the topic section "regarding Hebrews 6:4-8" of the topic on impossible to lose Salvation explains that the person can be restored to building inheritance by repenting.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 9 Or know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with men, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you: but ye were washed, but ye were sanctified, but ye were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God.

In the scriptures, there are examples of people that absolutely have Salvation but committed blasphemy against the Holy Spirit through their actions and even their thoughts.  The greatest four greatest sins of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, that can committed by a Christian that has Salvation, by committing any of these actions:

  1. Worshiping any false god,
  2. Adultery,
  3. Murder, and
  4. Cruelty to children or elderly.

Even after committing these four specific areas of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, it is is impossible to lose Salvation once Salvation has been received as it is a Marking by the Holy Spirit with numerous promises in the scriptures.  Salvation is a gift from God that cannot be earned.  Our inheritance with the rewards in Heaven are earned will be lost up until that point of the blasphemy.

This is an excerpt from the Apostle Topic:

After Jesus Christ and the Disciples has finished eating the Last Supper, the remaining eleven Disciples, Judas has left their company on a mission of betrayal, then Jesus Christ and the eleven went to the Mount of Olives.  In Matthew 26:33-35, Peter speaks about never denying Jesus Christ, but Jesus Christ tells Peter that "before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times".  Later, Peter did deny Jesus Christ three times and Peter did lose his Discipleship, which is then regained later.

Matthew 26:34-35 33 And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him. 34 Jesus said to him, "Truly I say to you that this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." 35 Peter said to Him, "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You." All the disciples said the same thing too.

After the resurrection, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome were at the tomb.  The different accounts from the different Gospels state that they are told to tell the good news to the Disciples and Peter.  Biblical Scholars point out that Peter is singled out as not part of the remaining Disciples which from the subject and grammar indicates that he is not part of the remaining disciples, which is confirmed in the scriptures such as John 21:15-19. 
 
John 21:15-19 15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon son of John, do you love me more than these? Yes, Lord, he said, you know that I love you. Jesus said, Feed my lambs. 16 Again Jesus said, Simon son of John, do you love me? He answered, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. Jesus said, Take care of my sheep. 17 The third time he said to him, Simon son of John, do you love me? Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, Do you love me? He said, Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you. Jesus said, Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go. 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, Follow me!
Mark 16:6-7 6 And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him.  7 "But go, tell His disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.'"

After Jesus Christ's resurrection, He had several appearances where one of them was on the Sea of Galilee.  Note that Sea of Galilee, is a figure of speech, as the Sea is really a very large lake.  In John chapter 21 there is the event when Jesus Christ has breakfast with the fish caught in the Sea of Galilee, which is the third time Jesus Christ appears to disciples and Peter.

During breakfast Jesus Christ asks Peter three times "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?", where Peter replies each time "You know that I love you".  In John 21:19, Jesus Christ confirms Peter's reinstatement, "Follow Me!", followed by a dialogue with Peter concerning intimate topics that the scripture states "I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written", in verse John 21:25.

John 21:19 Now this He said, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, "Follow Me!"
John 21:25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that should be written.

Jesus Christ predicted several times in His walk with the Disciples that he would be betrayed.  This demonstrates Jesus Christ's foreknowledge of Judas Iscariot's actions.  Notice the phrase "and one of you is a devil", and betrayal is meant as someone trusted to perform and act one way and does the exact opposite to the harm of someone, and others. 

John 6:66-71 66 Upon this many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. 67 Jesus said therefore unto the twelve, Would ye also go away? 68 Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. 69 And we have believed and know that thou art the Holy One of God. 70 Jesus answered them, Did not I choose you the twelve, and one of you is a devil? 71 Now he spake of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

Judas Iscariot never received and asked for Salvation, which is reflected in John 17:12.  The structure of the grammar used by Jesus Christ in John 17:12 reflects that Judas Iscariot was never part of the twelve Disciples by the words used in the original Koine Greek. 

If Judas Iscariot was part of the twelve in having Salvation, then the words used would mean "None has been lost except for the one that I would NOT save" as if Jesus Christ refused to give Salvation to Judas Iscariot, which is not true.  This is confirmed when Judas Iscariot stated "I have betrayed innocent blood", which gives all of us the thoughts of Judas Iscariot after the betrayal.  Judas Iscariot had been scheming against Jesus Christ and additionally all of the Disciples during the fellowship as exemplified by stealing from their treasury.

John 17:12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost but the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.

Did Adam and Eve Commit Treason? Yes

Adam and Eve committed the most grievances of sins by having direct contact with God and doing the only one thing that God prohibited them from doing.

Can We Lose our Salvation for Blasphemy? No

There are penalties on all sins including Blasphemy, where God indicates Blasphemy has a problem where it is not forgivable, BUT God did not state in the problem of forgiveness means loss of Salvation.   Additionally, everyone of us has had blasphemy thoughts in our lifetime and at some point potentially have acted on our thoughts.

It is impossible to lose Salvation

Blasphemy in a Leadership Position such as a Pastor

Any one that is leadership in Christianity can make mistakes in doctrine, being an ambassador of Jesus Christ as all Christians should be, and many more areas; but there are specific areas that a person cannot do as it is a form of blasphemy with consequences.

The Pastor and Leadership of a any type of Christian Church and Organization, and even a Bible Study Group, need to be prepared for temptations.  It is almost beyond belief how many Pastors have been caught publicly and exposed to the Media for the embarrassment of someone who is representing God,  The most common four areas are:

  1. In Adultery,
  2. Improper handling of Church Funds for obsessive salaries and bonuses,
  3. Outright embezzlement, and
  4. An ostentatious lifestyle of the rich and famous.  

Not much needs to be explained scripturally why these four areas are wrong, yet there are still other areas of wrong doing.  Pastors and Teachers have a greater level of accountability as explained in the scriptures such as 1 Timothy 3:1-17.  If an explanation is required, then this ignorance of the importance of ambassadorship (3rd Commandment) of a church leader is proof of unwarranted leadership roles.  

Axiom Statement

A Pastor, Evangelist or anyone in a position of Christian leadership that while in church leadership or being a Christian before Christian Leadership:

must immediately resign and NEVER return to a position of leadership in a Church or Ministry.  In place of returning, after a long period of restitution has been attempted, then the person can return to a position of service only in a Christian congregation which involves no possibility of leadership.  Returning to a role of leadership, puts God up for public shame.

(Note: These seven bullet points are part of the Four Greatest Sins.  The only exception for leadership is someone in a prison scenario or a recovery group, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, where the leader and all members may be involved in one area of the seven bullet points.)

Forgiveness is absolutely there from God, but a Church Leader participating (or participated) in any of the seven bullet points is similar to Esau not holding his birthright in high regards, which God required of all first-borns in the Old Testament Dispensation Period.  Esau traded the birthright for a bowl of stew to eat, as read in Genesis Chapter 25.  Esau forsook his birthright responsibility which his parents, his brother Jacob and others witnessed or learned later thus putting God up to public shame.  The consequences for Esau are explained more fully in Hebrews 12:15-17

Hebrews 12:15-17 15 See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled; 16 that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. 17 For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears.

If any of us are going to a place of worship that has leadership, by someone who has committed anyone of these seven bullet points while being a church leader, then we:

  1. Must demand their resignation, through proper procedures as detailed in Matthew 18:15-20 and 1 Timothy 5:19-20, or
  2. Stop going to the place of worship which this person is in a leadership position. 

Attending a place of worship, with a leader who committed any one of these seven bullet points while being a church leader, then this puts God up to public shame because the person was a spokesperson for God.  The ramifications are:

  • The Honor and Dignity of God has been publically disgraced.
  • New Christians will be discouraged or even stop going to Church.
  • Non-Christians will not necessarily believe in the power of God can make people better.
  • The magnitude of these seven bullet points will most likely damage the victims for their entire lifetime.

Again the person is absolutely forgivable, but should not be in a leadership role of any kind in a Church, Ministry and even a Bible Study.  As an example, consider the sin of Adultery as one type of form of blasphemy.  It unfortunately has to be stated that God and all of us absolutely require our spouse, sons, daughters, friends, visitors and even ourselves have protection and no fear from the predatory act of adultery by a Church leader in a Church venue and also in the life of a Church leader.

  1. The sin of adultery is a form of blaspheming the Holy Spirit for a Church leader, as such a person is called by God as a role of God's representative to the Christian community and non-believing world with special anointing of gifts from God, just like Prophets in the Old Testament. 
  2. The Church leader who commits adultery does NOT suffer the loss of Salvation, as it is impossible for anyone to lose Salvation, but the sin of adultery for a Church leader has a specific consequence along with others, which is to no longer serve in any role of leadership in a Church, with the exception in the areas to serve as a leader in:
    (a) Prison Ministries,
    (b) Alcoholics/Drug/Sex Anonymous Ministries, and
    (c) Adultery type-of Recovery Ministries
    where disclosure of a person's weaknesses and mistakes are part of recovery, rehabilitation and examples for others to know they can overcome their problems.
  3. Failure to cease serving in a role of Church leadership is a continued grievous sinful action of putting Jesus Christ in "public disgrace" as explained in great detail in the "regarding Hebrews 6:4-8" topic link.
James 3:1 Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.

ONE OF THE GREATEST PROOFS that a person serving in Church Leadership should never return to the role of leadership after adultery is given in the scriptures concerning Moses, who did NOT commit adultery, but falsely represented God.  An adulterous Church Leader has misrepresented God.  A few Biblical Scholars, which this author agree, state that Moses is a perfect example of the seriousness of representing God correctly.  Moses for 40-years lead Israel during the Exodus, and there one incident that God forgave him but the significance of misrepresenting God had a very punitive consequence.  Some of us might initially think it is not fair for this to happen to Moses after 40-years of faithfulness, until we realize we cannot commit specific sins that will publicly dishonor God and God's Glory

Moses is one of the greatest teachers in the scriptures, that far surpass any modern-day Church Leader's abilities.  The mistake that Moses made occurred during the Exodus wandering when Israel needed water.  God had instructed, in an earlier occasion to strike a rock to bring forth water for Israel.  On the next occasion, God instructed Moses to ONLY speak to the rock and water would come forth for Israel.  On the second occasion, Moses was angry at the people so Moses strikes the rock disobeying God, Numbers 20:6-12.  Moses misrepresented God by striking the rock the second time, which gave the impression to the people that God was angry at the people, when God was not.  Also, the striking of the rock the second time, broke the model of the future Jesus Christ missions.  The rock is an idiom for Jesus Christ and the water the Holy Spirit, where Jesus Christ was to be smitten once in His first mission at the Cross, and not smitten the second time in His Glory.  Moses then had the consequence of not being able to enter the Promise Land.

Exodus 17:5-7

Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink. So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, Is the Lord among us or not?
Numbers 20:6-12

6 Moses and Aaron went from the assembly to the entrance to the tent of meeting and fell facedown, and the glory of the Lord appeared to them. 7 The Lord said to Moses, 8 Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink.

9 So Moses took the staff from the Lord s presence, just as he commanded him. 10 He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock? 11 Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.

12 But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.
Revelation 22:1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb

(Future Eternity of water coming from the Throne of God.  God is our Rock of Salvation.)

There is the question if God will be still present in an adulterous and repented church leader's work at a Church?  "Yes" is the answer, but that is because God's Word will never go out void, Isaiah 55:11, but every moment the adulterous repented church leader is working in church leadership is a sin against God.  Furthermore, if makes God appear to have no power to change lives if a church leader, who should be mature had adultery even in the past, and can sin in such a grievous sin.

Isaiah 55:11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

God absolutely still loves a Church leader who has committed adultery and the sin will be forgiven by God, but there are still consequences besides no longer being a role of Church leadership for the remainder of their life.  Grace and Mercy applies to all of us, as everyone of us are sinners, where there are always other areas to serve God and build Rewards in Heaven because of our love for Jesus Christ.
